travel & transport 광둥어을(를) 왜 배워야 하나요?

Travel Cantonese is the highest-leverage Cantonese you will ever learn. The same fifty phrases get you through Hong Kong International Airport, the hotel in Central, the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour, and the MTR from Kowloon to the New Territories. Whether you are landing in Chek Lap Kok, riding the Airport Express to Hong Kong Station, or taking the high-speed rail to Guangzhou, the practical Cantonese of travel is the same — and speaking even a few words of it changes the way Hongkongers treat you. Cantonese is not Mandarin; it has nine tones, a different vocabulary, and a culture of directness that catches visitors off guard. LangOria's travel-phrase deck is built around the ten sentences you actually need at the airport, the hotel front desk, the MTR station, and the street corner where the map has failed you. Each phrase is paired with audio shadowing, an example dialogue, and a culture tip that tells you when to add 'aa' for softness and when to be direct. The same ten phrases get you through taxi rides, market shopping, pharmacy runs, and the small emergencies of being a stranger in Hong Kong. A week of the ten-minute daily loop is enough to internalise them — and that single week pays off every trip for the rest of your life.

문화 및 에티켓

In Hong Kong, service is fast and interactions are brief — a nod and 'm4 goi1' (thank you / excuse me) is the social lubricant. Cantonese culture values efficiency; long pleasantries are not expected. Add 'aa3' at the end of sentences to soften them ('hai6 mai6 aa3' — isn't it). Tipping is not standard — restaurants add a 10% service charge; bellhops may expect HK$10-20. The MTR is the backbone of Hong Kong transport — get an Octopus card (baat3 daa3), tap in and out, and it works on buses, ferries, and convenience stores too. Hong Kong has a strong queueing culture — never cut a line. Red minibuses (red top) are fixed-route but you hail them and pay cash; green minibuses are scheduled. Restaurant water may be hot or cold; ask for 'bing1 seoi2' (ice water) if you want cold. Avoid the number four (sei3, homophone for 'death') in gifts. Street addresses use building names more than numbers. English is widely spoken in Central and tourist areas, but Cantonese wins warmth in local neighbourhoods, dai pai dong stalls, and wet markets. 'm4 goi1' is thank you for a service; 'do1 ze6' is thank you for a gift.

이 시나리오 학습 방법

Spend three to five days on the travel deck before any trip to Hong Kong or Guangdong. Review the ten phrases with spaced repetition until recall is automatic, then drill the example dialogue out loud with a partner or a recording. Cantonese is tonal — nine tones — so shadow the audio closely, copying the melody rather than reading the characters. On the trip itself, use each phrase at least once in real life; Hongkongers are encouraging of any attempt and often switch to English to help. The ten-minute daily loop is enough; travel Cantonese is a finite vocabulary you can master in a week. Three concrete drills: (1) Morning — shadow the audio for two minutes, focusing on the high-level and mid-rising tones, which carry most travel words; (2) Midday — run the dialogue out loud, swapping in your hotel name and MTR stop; (3) Evening — write one sentence you will say tomorrow (e.g. 'ngo5 soeng2 heoi3 [place]') and rehearse it twice before bed. By day seven, use them with a stranger without translating first.
